About the plant

Wintergreen is a creeping evergreen shrublet of North American acid woodland and bog margins, ankle-high, with small glossy oval leaves and bright red berries that persist all winter. Crush a leaf and the smell is immediate and unmistakable: methyl salicylate, which the plant does not store ready-made but manufactures the moment tissue is damaged, by releasing an enzyme onto a stored precursor. It is the original source of the flavour, though nearly all of what is sold as wintergreen flavour today is synthetic.

Ingredients

Tincture: Gaultheria procumbens dried leaf, organic sugar-cane alcohol, distilled water, vegetable glycerin USP.
Glycerite: Gaultheria procumbens dried leaf, vegetable glycerin USP, distilled water.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Apply a small amount directly to clean, intact skin with a fingertip or a cotton pad. You can also add it to a cream or oil of your own — shake before each use, as the extract does not dissolve in oil. Patch-test on a small area first and wait 24 hours before wider use.

Warnings

For external use only. Do not take internally. Wintergreen leaf releases methyl salicylate, a relative of aspirin. Do not use if you are allergic to aspirin or other salicylates. If you take blood thinners such as warfarin, ask your doctor before use. Not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Keep away from eyes and mucous membranes.

Keep out of reach of children. Not for use on broken skin, open wounds or damaged skin. Discontinue use if irritation, redness or a rash develops. Do not use if the tamper seal is broken or missing. Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
